NASA has selected the University of Alabama at Birmingham to provide the necessary systems needed to return temperature-sensitive science payloads to Earth from the Moon.
The Lunar Freezer System contract is an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract with delivery orders on a cost plus fixed fee basis. The contract begins on Thursday, December 4, with a 66-month base period and two additional periods that could extend the contract until June 3, 2033. The total estimated value of the contract is $37 million.
Under the contract, the winner will be responsible for providing the secure, reliable and cost-effective hardware and software systems required by NASA to store critical scientific materials, including lunar geological samples, human research samples and biological experiment samples as they travel aboard the Artemis spacecraft to Earth from the lunar surface. The awarding contractor was selected after a thorough evaluation of submitted proposals by NASA engineers. NASA's source selection body made the selection after reviewing the evaluation materials based on the evaluation criteria contained in the request for proposals.
