AU Deals: Black Friday Week Is Over, but Some Sick Bargains Forgot to Leave

I woke up this morning in that weird post-Cyber Monday haze where you think all the great deals have packed their bags and disappeared. It turns out not. The stores are still absolutely lousy with discounts. If you're anything like me, you might want to get back to the store before the stores realize the deals should have ended days ago. Lots of things to catch if you're quick!

In retro news, I use a Marine Corps HECU welding torch to light a 26-candle cake baked for Half-Life: Opposing Forcea brutal expansion that cast me in 1999 as a Marine caught in the same Black Mesa disaster, with a whole new perspective. I can't overstate how cool it was to watch bowel movements meet hesitation from perhaps a crazier perspective.

Playing as Adrian Shepard meant taking on familiar Xen horrors (as well as new Race X horrors and CIA assassins) in unfamiliar ways, teaming up with AI squadmates, and wielding unusual weapons that added a special flavor to gunfights. Oppositing Force didn't just add layers. It proved that expansions could be ambitious, story-rich, and mechanically amazing, and for many of us, it was the moment when Half-Life stopped being GOTY and started becoming an in-universe.

If your co-workers ever become irritable, remain calm and just walk away.

Winner: Metaphor: ReFantazio

Over the years, Atlus' cult RPG Persona has gone from a cool underground RPG series from Japan to one of the biggest franchises in modern gaming. But with Metaphor: ReFantazio, it's clear that the developers of Persona were looking to take things to new heights. Swapping the setting of a modern Japanese high school for a pure fantasy world full of long-eared knights and bat-like ninjas, Atlus' Studio Zero has created an incredible and timely meditation on political infighting and demagoguery.

Following the death of the king, the United Kingdom of Euchronia, divided by racial prejudice among its citizens, begins the process of holding its first popular election, which begins a grand intercontinental adventure. Anyone familiar with the Persona series will find familiar hallmarks here. Players spend their time making their way through challenging dungeons filled with terrifying monsters, and spend their free moments building relationships with various party members and residents throughout the land.

But while the Persona games used these quiet moments to reaffirm the virtues of youthful friendship, Metaphor uses this time to grapple with more head-scratching questions. What defines the duty of a knight or the duties of those born into wealth? Can the pain of racism ever be healed and is religious tolerance a foolhardy endeavor? These are not easy questions, but they are asked right throughout Metaphor's 70 hours of gameplay.

While Studio Zero refrains from definitively answering these questions, it instead recognizes the virtues of empathy, kindness, and strength in the face of the overwhelming fear and hatred that can take root in an unstable world where leaders promise salvation in exchange for unwavering loyalty. Wrap up these philosophical musings in a stylish turn-based RPG that looks and feels amazing—complete with beautiful character designs from artist Shigenori Soejima and music by Shoji Meguro—and you'll quickly see why Metaphor: ReFantazio is IGN's Best Game of 2024.
” decoding=”async” class=”progressive-image article-image article-image-full-size jsx-1809694635 jsx-2338608387″ loading=”lazy” src=”data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7″ data-cy=”progressive-image”/>

Legitimate LEGO Deals

just like me did this last holiday seasonI'm celebrating with a LEGO section. At Matthew Manor my sons and I are racing/ranking the 2025 batch again. LEGO Advent Calendars. Basically, we open The City, Harry Potter, Minecraft and Star Wars every day and compare the mini trophies for Awesomeness and Real Christmas. The 2024 winner was Lego Marvel, but surprisingly there is no 2025 equivalent. So this year it's anyone's race.

Here are the cheapest prices for the four calendars we use. Check them out for yourself or simply live through our unboxings.
