B.D. Wong released a long apologies in topics following a “racist comment” on social media. The Law & Order and Jurassic World actor sparked backlash after commenting on a post.
Mike Halston (aka @TheRealTarzan, who has 16 million followers on Instagram). Halston, who is Black, posted a photo of the animal and captioned it: “Name this animal…wrong answers only.” Wong allegedly responded in a now-deleted comment: “Looks like a black man.”
“Y’all, I made a really bad joke,” Wong later wrote on Threads after the comment began circulating on social media. “Like most people who get into hot water, I removed it for damage control, but it's there and continues to hurt and disappoint, and I'm very sorry about that. Very stupid, but I tried to follow the “Wrong Answers Only” prompt with the most incorrect answer. It only succeeded because it was very wrong. I know no one gets a free pass. I'm sorry if this #wtfbd moment tarnished any respect you may have had for me. And thank you for keeping the Internet safe for everyone.”
Hours later, the actor added: “I want to elaborate on the racist comment I posted to make it clear that I recognize and accept responsibility for how terrible it is. It's also wrong to try to 'explain' anything and I think it further undermines people's trust.”
“Let me spend some energy on how wrong I know it is to exploit a despicable racist image in a supposed spirit of humor; I know better, but again, no excuses. I'm very sorry for the pain I caused and for making light of something so deeply offensive,” Wong concluded.
Wong is best known for his role as Dr. George Huang on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which he began starring in in the show's second season. After a long break after season 17, Wong returned to the role earlier this year for the show's 27th season. His other notable television roles include Mr. Robot, for which he was nominated for an Emmy Award for Guest Actor in a Drama Series, and Gotham. Wong originated the role of Dr. Henry Wu in 1993's Jurassic Park and reprized the character in the first Jurassic World trilogy from 2015 to 2022.
