“Call a police officer you know to help you,” Kiffin said. “Because you know them personally because you go out of state. And you have to turn around and people are yelling at you, you know, trying to run you off the road. I don't know what they are going to do. And so… It affects you.”

While Kiffin acknowledged the enthusiasm of Ole Miss fans, he also suggested that his experience during the trip to the airport served as confirmation of his decision to leave Oxford.

“I hoped to end a historic six-season run with the team this year by leading Ole Miss through the playoffs, capitalizing on the team's incredible success and commitment to finishing strong, and investing fully in the playoffs with guardrails in place to protect the program in all areas of concern,” Kiffin said in a statement.

“Keith Carter turned down my request, despite the team also asking him to allow me to continue coaching them so they could better maintain their high level of play. “Unfortunately, this means Friday’s Egg Bowl was my last game coaching the Rebels.”

Defensive coordinator Pete Golding will take over as head coach for Ole Miss' upcoming playoff game. Kiffin finished his six-year tenure in Oxford with a 55–19 record, making him the third-highest scoring coach in school history.

As for the next chapter, Kiffin thanked LSU fans who met him at the capital's Baton Rouge airport and said the reception made him feel vindicated.

“I saw the board and management there,” he said. “And I felt the power of this place. And then I get into the car. And when we leave, there are fans there. They're just all there, at the airport. And their excitement and their passion.”
