Apple announced that Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence Strategy John Giannandrea will retire after nearly eight years in the role.
Giannandrea will remain an advisor until spring 2026, when he will be replaced by Amar Subramanya, who will become the company's vice president of artificial intelligence, reporting to Craig Federighi.
Following the change, Subramanya will lead the Apple Foundation's models, machine learning research, and artificial intelligence security and evaluation.
Apple's VP of AI/ML will retire in 2026
Apple credited Giannandrea for building a “world-class team” and developing and implementing “critical artificial intelligence technologies.”
It's unknown whether this change came in response to pressure from the industry, but Apple has certainly received its fair share of criticism for lagging behind competitors when it comes to artificial intelligence.
Part of Apple's slow moves is because it favors on-device processing over cloud-based systems. Private Cloud Compute fills this gap, but the Cupertino giant has also struck a deal with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Siri. Rumors of a similar deal with Google have also been circulating online in recent weeks.
Federighi already plays a big role in Apple's evolving artificial intelligence strategy, including work on a more personalized Siri, although that has already been delayed until 2026.
Subramanya joins us with extensive experience gained as Vice President of Artificial Intelligence at Microsoft and 16 years at Google, where he also led artificial intelligence products such as Gemini.
“AI has long been central to Apple’s strategy, and we are pleased to welcome Amar to Craig’s leadership team and bring his outstanding AI expertise to Apple,” the CEO said. Tim Cook said.
Apple says the changes will help it “continue to push the boundaries of what's possible.” Apple shares rose about 1.6% following the announcement.
