EXCLUSIVE: Seeing its specification on the blacklist Woman of the hour produced as Anna Kendrick's feature directorial debut and sold Netflix in a bidding war, screenwriter Ian McDonald sold another project to the streamer – a full-length untitled thriller.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, except that the film is set in the world of cults. Academy Award Nominees Andrea Berloff And John Gatins will produce as part of their overall deal on the streamer where they currently have The Last Mrs. Parrish And Fight for '84 in production/mail.
Selling to Netflix for approximately $11 million after its critically acclaimed TIFF premiere to McDonald's. Woman of the Hour is a fictional take on the story of serial killer Rodney Alcala and his infamous appearance on television. Dating game in the midst of a years-long killing spree in the 1970s. The story is told from the point of view of aspiring actress Kendrick Cheryl, who in the series is unwittingly wooed by a killer (Daniel Zovatto). Macdonald wrote the film as a special commission, and AGC Studios and Bondit Media Capital eventually offered to finance the project. Roy Lee produced the film along with Miri Yoon, JD Lifshitz and Rafael Margules. McDonald, also an EP on the project, is repped by CAA, Entertainment 360 and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
nominated for an Oscar for writing articles about Straight from Compton And Flightaccordingly, Berloff and Gatins most recently co-authored The Last Mrs. Parrishcrime thriller based on the novel by Liv Constantine, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Jennifer Lopez. Lopez plays a con artist (Lopez) who targets a wealthy couple, the Parrishes, as her next victim. She insinuates herself into their lives with a master plan to become the next Mrs. Parrish, but discovers that the wife's life is much more complicated than she could have imagined. Along with Andy Weiss, the pair also co-wrote Fight for '84in which Jamie Foxx plays the coach who helped the US Olympic boxing team rebuild from the ground up after a devastating plane crash.
Also recently worked with Netflix (and Jennifer Lopez) as co-creator of the hit action film. MotherBerloff is repped by CAA, Entertainment 360 and McKuin Frankel Whitehead.
