YouTube introduces its own version of Spotify Wrapped for videos

YouTube is introducing a new overview that will give you a quick look at your most notable video habits over the past year. According to YouTube's announcement, the Recap feature “uniquely highlights interests, deep dives, and moments” based on your viewing history, providing up to 12 cards that show top channels, interests, and how your taste in video has changed over time.

This is similar to the Spotify Wrapped experience released at the end of the year, which other services such as Apple Music And Amazon Music have also rhymed in recent years. YouTube's Recap feature will even assign users a “personality type” based on their viewing habits, such as “Adventurer,” “Skill Builder,” and “Creative Spirit,” which seem comparable to Spotify listener personality types.

Recap launches to YouTube users in the US starting today and will be available worldwide this week. This feature is available on both mobile devices and desktop computers and can be found by clicking the dedicated button on the YouTube home page or the You tab in the user menu.

Some statistics related to listening and viewing music, such as your top artists and songs, will also be included in the summary, although they do not replace existing ones. Let's summarize the use of YouTube Music which provides an annual look at the top artists, songs, genres and podcasts. Users of the YouTube Music app will still have a “separate YouTube Music overview available within the app,” according to the post YouTube support page.

In addition to launching the video review, YouTube also shared some trend charts that show which topics, authors, podcasts and songs were most popular among US users this year. Some statistics are not particularly surprising – MrBeast remains the best creator and The Joe Rogan Experience for example, ranks number one in podcast rankings, but it's interesting to see that K-Pop Demon Hunters the soundtrack was less popular in Shorts compared to its dominance on the overall top songs chart.
