Red Hot Chili Peppers bass prodigy Flea has announced a new solo single, “A Plea”, which will appear on her upcoming album, due out next year.
In an Instagram video of Flea lying on the floor with his bass and trumpet, Flea announced that the single would be released tomorrow morning, along with a video directed by his daughter Clara Balzary.
“This is the first song on an album that I've released and that I'm putting out, and I've recorded something that is truly the essence of me, the best of me, and I'm really glad that I was able to articulate the best part of who I am and, you know, my relationship with the world and how I hope for a higher level of communication between people,” he said.
He said, “This record is amazing,” although it's worth noting that the musicians he subsequently named as collaborators on the project (Josh Johnson, Deanthony Parks, Anna Butters, Jeff Parker, Ricky Washington, Vikram Devastali, Mauro Refosco) are jazz and experimental musicians, so it's probably safe to assume it won't be “rock” in the vein of the Chili Peppers.
Flea never released a full-length solo album. In 2012, he released a five-song jazz EP entitled Helen Burns.
