Dominic McLaughlin takes on the role Harry Potter in the HBO series reboot and recently gave an interview on the BBC's Saturday Mash-Up! Live” where he said it was “crazy” to receive a personal letter from none other than Daniel Radcliffewho played the boy wizard in Warner Bros.' eight-film franchise. Radcliffe revealed last month that he wrote words of encouragement to McLaughlin before filming began on the HBO series “Harry Potter.”
“It was crazy,” McLaughlin said of Radcliffe's support. “My dad was eavesdropping on me on the train and he just gave me this letter. I read it and then I got to the end and it said, 'Dan R.' I was freaking out, but I had to [keep cool]. I was on the train.”
McLaughlin added that filming on HBO's Harry Potter series is “going amazing,” adding, “It's going really well. I made friends with everyone, it’s great to be there.”
Radcliffe said on Good Morning America in November he wrote a letter to McLaughlin and received a “very nice letter” from the young actor in response. McLaughlin will helm the new Harry Potter alongside Alastair Stour as Ron and Arabella Stanton as Hermione.
“I don't want to be a ghost in these kids' lives, but I just wanted to write to him and say, 'I hope you have a better time and an even better time than I did – I had a great time, but I hope you have an even better time,'” Radcliffe said. “And I do, I just see these pictures of him and the other kids and I just want to hug them. They seem so young. I just look at them and say, “Oh, this is crazy, I did this at that age.” But it's also incredibly sweet and I hope they have a great time.”
Rupert Grint later told the BBC that he similarly sent a letter to Stout giving him his full blessing as the role of Ron Weasley would be taken over by a new actor.
“I wrote him a letter before they even started, kind of passing the baton,” Grint said. “I really just wished him the best. I had so much fun going into this world and I hope he has the same experience… It's kind of weird that this cycle is repeating itself again. I'm really intrigued by what it's going to be like.”
Grint admitted there is a “little family resemblance” between himself and Stout, adding: “I think it's great that it's a brand new thing. It'll be its own thing and I think it'll be fun.”
The Harry Potter series is scheduled to premiere on HBO and HBO Max in 2027.
