FDA declares 3 outbreaks over

The Food and Drug Administration has closed its investigation into three foodborne illness outbreaks.

Regarding the salmonella outbreak in Oranienburg, according to an epidemiological investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, sick people reported eating sprouts before they became ill. There were five confirmed patients. The FDA first reported the outbreak on August 20.

CDC, FDA, and state and local partners conducted epidemiological investigations and tracing, and collected and analyzed food and environmental samples. All samples collected as part of the investigation were negative for salmonella.

Once investigators had enough information to confirm that sprouts were the source of this outbreak, the outbreak was no longer considered ongoing and the sprouts had expired and could not be purchased.

The FDA investigation has been closed into the Salmonella Anatum outbreak associated with sprouted beans. There were 12 confirmed patients. The agency first reported the outbreak on July 9. The outbreak was linked to Deep brand Sprouted Mat (Moth) and Moon (Mung) frozen beans and Deep Premium Select brand frozen surti undhiu mix.

The FDA investigation has been closed due to the Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak associated with eggs. Confirmed patients numbered 105. The source of the outbreak was identified as large brown, golden-yolk “sunlight/omega-3” eggs obtained from Country Eggs LLC of Lucerne Valley, California.

There were likely many more patients in all three salmonella outbreaks than were confirmed. The CDC reports that for every person identified as a patient in the outbreak, 29 patients become infected because some do not seek medical attention and others do not undergo specific testing for salmonella infection.
