Minnesota government officials have accused Minnesota's Democratic Gov. Tim Walz of being solely responsible for massive fraud that has depleted the state's social services programs, arguing that he retaliated against whistleblowers who tried to raise the alarm.

Whistleblowers alleged that agency heads appointed by Walz “deliberately ignored rules and laws to cover up reports of fraud” and “were unqualified for their jobs and were instead paid leadership jobs thanks to the friendship of Tim Walz.” According to the statement, employees who witnessed the fraud were “closed, transferred to other positions and ordered to remain silent.”
The staff named several officials they said avoided accountability, including Shireen Gandy, Jess Gale, Jodie Harpstead, Natasha Mertz and Eric Grumdahl.
Waltz denies that concerns over allegations of racism have slowed his administration's response. He said His administration has “erred on the side of generosity” during the pandemic, the New York Times said, and pointed to new measures to prevent fraud.

The whistleblowers said they are now turning to federal authorities for help. “We cannot fight fraud in Minnesota alone,” they wrote.
