Tomb Raider developer and Embracer subsidiary Crystal Dynamics has confirmed its third round of layoffs this year.
In a statement posted on LinkedInThe studio said it cut fewer than 30 people across various departments and projects as it continues to restructure the company. “Crystal deeply thanks all those affected for their incredible talent, hard work and dedication, which have helped shape the studio in so many ways. We are committed to offering you all of our resources and support during this transition,” the statement said.
“To our players, as the realities of the industry continue to evolve, we have made this painful choice to optimize the continued development of our flagship Tomb Raider game, while also preparing the rest of the studio to create new games in the future.”
Crystal Dynamics previously laid off an unknown number of people in August as a result of what they called “evolving business conditions.” A few weeks later Bloomberg reported this. these cuts were made after Microsoft abandoned its Perfect darkness reboot, which was worked on by Embracer studio.
The company also laid off 17 employees in March, allegedly trying to refocus on “ongoing business needs.”
Crystal Dynamics was acquired by Embracer in 2022 along with other former Square Enix studios including Eidos Montreal. The Swedish conglomerate has also acquired key franchises such as Deus Ex and Tomb Raider.
Owned by Embracer—which recently split into three separate publicly traded companies After enacting a massive restructuring program that resulted in studio closures, asset sales and mass layoffs, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal made significant cuts.
Crystal Dynamics is currently working on what Embracer calls the “next major release” of the Tomb Raider series.
