MSU reportedly names interim head coach following firing of Jonathan Smith

Michigan State football One of the current staff will reportedly take over as interim head coach amid the sacking of Jonathan Smith.

Smith was officially fired as Michigan State's head coach on Sunday afternoon, ending a saga that had been going on for months. Spartans I don't have any more games this year, but according to 247Sports Insider Matt Zenitz Michigan State defensive coordinator Joe Rossi will serve as interim head coach.

It may seem strange for Michigan State to name an interim head coach at the end of the season, but it is often routine procedure. It's also notable that the early signing period for rookies begins this week, so I'm guessing Rossi will lead that effort while the Spartans begin their search for their next head coach. This could also be an opportunity for Rossi to win over the next head coach and remain on the Spartans coaching staff moving forward.

Michigan State finished that season 4–8 overall and 1–8 in Big Ten play. That tough season ultimately proved too difficult for Smith to survive as head coach, and new athletic director Jay Butt decided to fire him on Sunday. Michigan State will now continue its coaching search to name its next head coach.
