Jennifer English is no stranger to putting herself in other characters' shoes, having played roles in everything from Elden Ring to Baldur's Gate 3but she still found it difficult to play a double role in Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33 because, well, it's a two-in-one concert.
Spoilers ahead for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Clair Obscur is full of twists and turns, but there's perhaps no greater revelation than realizing that the world you've spent hours exploring is somehow “fake” – it's painted. Not only that, some characters are actually just “drawn” doubles of “real” people on the outside.
That's the case with two of Jennifer English's roles – Mayelle and Alicia – and it left her a little upset. “I'm really thinking about playing Alicia at the moment,” the actor told GamesRadar+ at the Golden Joystick Awards. “It was difficult because I had to find the subtlety of how it’s the same but different.”
“And although [developer Sandfall interactive] influenced my voice [I had to] finding a completely different rhythm, a different personality, while essentially staying true to your soul,” she added. “And I think I'm actually really proud of that, but also every scene with my amazing co-stars because they're all iconic.”
Elsewhere at the awards ceremony, Expedition 33 creative director Guillaume Broche said: he doesn't want the studio to grow or change much in response to the game's commercial success and critical acclaim.
