Texas Republican Quickly Launches Bid To Keep House Seat In Family After Twin, Rep. Troy Nehls, Announces Retirement

Former Republican sheriff candidate Trever Nehls of Fort Bend County, Texas, announced Saturday his candidacy for the House seat being vacated by his twin brother, Rep. Troy Nehls.

Rep. Nehls, a MAGA Republican, announced his resignation from the House of Representatives on Saturday. mail on X, noting that he called President Donald Trump to inform him of the decision. Troy always led with integrity, courage and a tireless commitment to public safety, and he put our community first.”

“District 22 needs a representative who will follow in Troy’s footsteps and stand shoulder to shoulder with President Trump to defend our conservative values, secure our borders, protect our families, and oppose the reckless and radical agenda that Democrats continue to push on the American people,” Trever Nehls continued. “I'm ready to take this fight. I know this area. And this area knows me.”

Trever Nehls previously narrowly lost elections for Fort Bend County Sheriff in 2020 and Fort Bend County Judge in 2022. according to to Ballotpedia. Trever Nehls previously served as a Fort Bend County constable in the Fourth Precinct.

“I will work every day to earn your trust and continue the tradition of America First leadership established by our retiring Congressman Troy Nehls,” Trever Nehls wrote in a Facebook post. “Your support is appreciated and I will strive to represent you with pride.”

GOP Reps. Wesley Hunt, Chip Roy, Morgan Luttrell, Jody S. Arrington and Michael McCaul of Texas also leave the House, roll call reported. Notably, Hunt is challenging Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn in the primary, and Roy is seeking the Republican nomination for state attorney general. Luttrell, Arrington and McCall resign.
