‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’ – and Vincent Lindon – Triumph at Torino Film Festival

Well done, very good! The Turin Film Festival announced the winner in the Best Film category, which went to Morgan Knibbe's The Garden of Earthly Delights. The film also received an award of 20,000 euros. It tells the story of a teenager, Guido, who lives in the slums of Manila and dreams of one day becoming a gangster.

The jury, composed of Ippolita di Maio, Lolita Sciamma, Vannes Destupe, Sergei Loznitsa and Giona Nazzaro, also celebrated “Ida, who sang so badly that even the dead rose, and joined her in song,” awarding her a special jury prize (along with 7,000 euros). Directed by Esther Ivakic.

Marianne Metivier's Night of the Night took home the award for best screenplay, while Sadie Scott and Maria Vrubel won in the acting categories for Fucktoys and Her Will Be Done, respectively.

Brittany Shine's “Seeds” won Best Documentary for its ability to “capture through powerful images the everyday life of a community forced to endure the hypocrisy of the words of the law,” the jury said. They also awarded “Coexistence, my ass!” and “Bobo” by Pippo Delbono.

In other news, following the popular Paul Newman retrospective, where one festival-goer, Marcello, got to see every film, the festival has also announced next year's star: Marilyn Monroe.

“She was not just an actress, but a legend, a vibrant icon of the collective imagination. The image chosen for the 44th Turin Film Festival was taken during her last photo shoot, just days before her death. It reflects both beauty and fragility and conveys a sense of nostalgia for the future, as if she knew that she was destined to live in eternity, not in the present,” said artistic director Giulio Basho.

The retrospective is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of her birth.

Speaking of stars: bye Vincent Lindon Taking home the festival's biggest award, the Stella della Mola Award, during the final evening, this year's Italian event also welcomed the likes of Juliette Binoche, Spike Lee, Antonio Banderas, Jacqueline Bisset and Vanessa Redgrave.

Despite her fragility, Redgrave, 88, introduced her son's film The Estate, in which she stars alongside husband Franco Nero – although she was quick to correct the moderator during the press conference.

“You shouldn’t say “your son.” This is the director of the film, Carlo Nero,” she said calmly. Bays called Redgrave “one of the best actresses in the world” and also praised her outspokenness and activism.

“I'm so glad that these international stars have been so generous to us. Now they know about the festival and tell their Western colleagues about it,” said Tiziana Rocca, responsible for global talent and international relations.

“They kept saying they needed to relax and really appreciated those who welcomed them to our cinemas. The audience was so warm and so large. They were also delighted with the city itself. I'm glad to see so many of them coming here for the first time and experiencing this wonderful place.”

American Pie veteran Jason Biggs showed off his directorial debut, Untitled Home Invasion Romance—and his brand new Italian passport. Terry Gilliam was also in attendance, causing quite a stir at the surprise screening of the rapturously received “Marty Supreme,” as stunned audience members formed a long, long line to take selfies with him.

“When I was 23 years old and [working] At the film festival, Terry Gilliam allowed me to show Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas for the first time in Italy. Thank you, Terry,” said Andrea Romeo of I Wonder Pictures ahead of “Marty Supreme.”

“The tagline of this film is ‘dream big,’ and this festival dreams big too.”
