Official: Mike Matheson to earn $6 million a year

In the last few minutes, we learned that the Canadiens have offered Mike Matheson a contract extension. But we still didn't know how much the deal would cost.

But now the Canadiens have confirmed it.

In fact, Quebecers would only earn $6 million a year. The new five-year contract will cover seasons from 2026-27 to 2030-2031.

We believe the Canadiens and the player should be happy with the price. Otherwise there would be no press to address this issue so early in the season.

And for the price, fans can be happy.

Matheson wasn't particularly greedy, as he wanted to keep Kent Hughes' salary balance and roster under the cap for the next few years.

In my opinion, he could have asked for at least $7 million per year. Even more…

Mike Matheson's contract is further proof of Montreal's incredible team culture. After all, to maintain that price, the defender had to feel at home in the locker room.

He is entering his fourth year and if he lives out the end of his contract he will spend nine years at his boyhood club.

This means that at the end of the season, only Patrik Laine, Alex Belzile, Samuel Blais, Nate Klerman, Mark Del Gaizo and Kaapo Kahkonen will be available as birds in the organization.

The biggest deal has already been decided.
