Hazardous snow squall warnings blanket southern Ontario

Several regions in southern Ontario are under winter storm and snow squall warnings on Thursday.

Environment Canada says these regions include areas around Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, where heavy snowfall can be expected as lake-driven snowfall increases across the region.

Snow caused by the lake will also affect the South Bruce Peninsula from Tobermory to Feversham. A yellow alert has been issued for the area, with strong winds up to 80 km/h and almost zero visibility due to heavy snowfall.

Yellow Alerts are more common and warn of hazardous weather that could cause damage, disruption, or harm to health. By comparison, orange warnings warn of severe weather.

Barrie, Orillia, Aurora and Collingwood are under an orange weather warning for dangerous squalls starting today. Up to 50 centimeters of snow is expected, and strong winds will reduce visibility to almost zero.

People under orange weather warnings are warned against traveling due to poor visibility, strong winds and possible road closures.

Moderate snowfall of 10 to 15 cm is expected in the Kawartha Lakes, with snow squalls expected in the Parry Sound and Huntsville areas, according to Environment Canada.

Environment Canada reminds the public to monitor weather warnings for changes.
