Telus offers a truly unlimited data plan, with a catch

Telus has brought back a truly unlimited data plan for anyone who uses a ton of mobile data every month.

The plan costs $105 per month in Ontario (or $115 if you also want to purchase a phone) and includes unlimited talk and data nationwide. Additionally, it has unlimited long distance calling to 27 pre-selected international destinations such as the US, Philippines, Hong Kong, Mexico and many more. Texting is also unlimited, and you can even send and receive messages to international numbers for free.

The only obvious caveat to this plan is that you're limited to only 50GB of hotspot usage each month, limiting its potential as your only internet source. I think some people will be able to handle this, but I'm guessing that when streaming video, most people will use more than 50GB per month. But if you have to share that data with your entire family, that becomes a whole different challenge.

Part of me wonders if Telus is actually using this plan as a way to make the other options more reasonable, because the $60 100GB option next to the unlimited plan makes a lot more sense. Plus, it doesn't have a limit on the number of access points, so you can theoretically get even more value out of it. For the same price, you can also get Telus' 250GB “Complete Explore” plan with data, talk and text available in Canada and 68 other countries, as well as unlimited hotspot, which seems like a better deal.

In fact, this plan only makes sense if you use an insane amount of data every month. I think there must be people like that, but since the average Canadian only uses 9GB of data each monthThe unlimited plan probably won't suit most people. I should also note that this data is not shareable, so if you have combined lines on a family plan, you are the only one who has unlimited use of full speed.

If you've made it this far in this story and are actually using more than 200GB per month, please share how to do so in the comments. I'm genuinely curious. The most I've ever managed to do on my own was 50GB, and that involved setting up two new data phones and a lot of work travel in one month.
