The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed Canadian midfielder Seth Handeby.
The six-foot-three, 245-pound defensive back was recently awarded the President's Trophy, which is given to the top defensive player in all of U Sports football. Other previous winners include Nelson Lokombo, Adam Auclair and Henok Muamba.
Handeby made 58 defensive tackles, six tackles for loss, six sacks, four forced fumbles and two interceptions for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in 2025, earning his second first-team U Sports All-Canadian selection.
Native of Saskatoon, Sask. last year ran a 4.70-second forty-yard dash and a 6.88-second three-cone dash with a touchdown on JC Abbott's prospect list. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2025 CFL Draft, although he likely would have been selected higher had he not planned to return to school.
In 53 collegiate games, Handeby recorded 229 tackles, 27.5 tackles for loss, 18 sacks, seven pass knockdowns, six forced tackles and two interceptions.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders finished atop the West Division standings in 2025 with a 12-6 record, finishing first in the West Division for the first time since 2019. The team then defeated the Montreal Alouettes in the 112th Gray Cup in Winnipeg, the team's first championship in 12 years. Trevor Harris went 11-5 as a starter, throwing for 4,549 yards, 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
The Roughriders ranked second in net offense, second in net defense and third in turnover differential of plus eight. The club's leading rusher was AJ Ouellette with 1,222 yards, the leading receiver was KeSean Johnson with 1,159 yards, and the leading tackler was AJ Allen with 91 tackles. Saskatchewan ranked second in attendance with an average attendance of 28,427, up 2.7 per cent from the previous year.
