Jacobs tops Dunstone at trials, nears bye to Canadian curling final

Calgary's Brad Jacobs has led the field in the race to advance to the 2025 Canadian Curling men's finals in Montana.

Jacobs (5-1) took sole possession of first place in the men's standings with one tie after a 6-2 win over Winnipeg's Matt Dunston in Wednesday morning play.

Jacobs finished the game with two interceptions in the 10th end.

Dunston tied for second place, 4-2, with Mike McEwen of Saskatoon and Brad Gushue of St. John's, New York. McEwen defeated Gushue 9-7 on Wednesday morning.

Jacobs, a '14 Olympian, was scheduled to face Gushue, the 2006 gold medalist, in a key game in the final round-robin draw on Wednesday night.

The winners of the men's and women's competitions are given a direct bye to their respective best-of-three final, while the second and third-placed teams meet in a knockout semi-final.

The winners of the tournament will represent Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, Italy.

In other early results, Toronto's John Epping defeated Calgary's Kevin Coe 8-4 and Winnipeg's Jordan MacDonald edged Saskatoon's Ryan Clater 7-6.

In the final draw Coe led 3-3, Epping 2-4 and McDonald and Kleiter 1-5.

The final women's draw was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, with elite skips Kerri Einarson of Gimli, Man., and Rachel Homan of Ottawa set to take on the top seed on the line.
