Donald Glover opens up about the recent health scare that forced him to cancel his tour last year.

He called it an “illness” at the time, but on Saturday night at the show, Glover said a doctor told him he had suffered a stroke.

Glover, who performs under the stage name Childish Gambino, shared the information on stage at the Tyler, Creator's Camp Flog Gnaw music festival in Los Angeles. His remarks were widely circulated on social networks.

“You guys voted for the ‘Where Was I?’ monologue,” Glover, 42, said. “I had a really bad headache in Louisiana, and I still did the show. I couldn't see very well, so when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital and the doctor said, 'You've had a stroke.'

The artist initially rescheduled his tour dates to September 2024 before canceling his remaining shows in the US, UK and Europe to focus on his health.

That's when Glover said it became clear something was wrong with his health. he needed to be “seriously confronted” which required cancellation rather than rescheduling.

Elamin was joined by cultural critics Ian Kamau, Sara-Tai Black and David Dennis Jr. to react to Childish Gambino's (aka Donald Glover) latest and reportedly final album, as well as to talk about the long-standing criticism of him.

Glover said he felt like he was letting everyone down and regretted not having been to Ireland before now. He also said that “they found a hole” in his heart and he had to have two surgeries.

“They say everyone has two lives, and the second life begins when you realize you have one,” Glover said. “You guys have one life, and honestly, the life I lived with you guys was such a blessing.”

The tour was intended to be a farewell tour for Glover's Childish Gambino persona after he previously announced that he was leaving his alter ego and that his fifth studio album under the moniker would be Bando Stone and New World — will be his last.

His representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.
