In 2022 Obama spoke candidly about her struggles with menopause, revealing that she suffered from severe hot flashes and a “creeping” weight gain that left her unable to fit into her clothes.
The author admitted that she had difficulty coping with some of these symptoms, in particular saying that her weight gain was “slowly creeping up” on her, forcing her to be “more careful” about her diet and exercise regimen.
Obama recently spoke at length about her style and feel comfortable in your body.
She spoke about the role fashion played in her life and how her time on the world stage during Barack's presidency influenced the way she presented herself in a limited podcast series called IMO: The Look.
In past episodes, she admitted that she was under enormous pressure to perform “really, really well so that the next people have a chance” and to “get it right” in case it affected how minorities were treated in leadership positions in the future.
The former first lady then spoke about how this influenced her clothing choices, calling it a “role” she played.
“A lot of my fashion decisions, as we talked about at The Look, were about using language as a way to convey a message about beauty, about culture, about the American spirit, about inclusivity,” she reflected.
“So, you know, I had a role,” she explained. “And now that I'm out of that role, fashion is about me, it's selfishly all about what I like and what I want to do.”
