Matthew Lillard is no stranger to iconic smart technology, and next he wants to visit a galaxy far, far away.
“Two things I've been saying for years: I desperately want to be in the Star Wars universe and I want to work with him again. James Gunn— Lillard tells GamesRadar+. – It's on my list. I'm friends with James [Gunn]. I don't know why he hasn't called me yet. If Star Wars called, would I care that I was a Stormtrooper? No. I mean, I'd rather be Luke Skywalker than a Stormtrooper or Han Solo. Oh my God, if I could be Han Solo, that would be incredible.”
Lillard told fans earlier this yearwhile appearing on stage in the upcoming second season of Daredevil: Born Again, he said he's not playing a superhero on the show… but he'd love to play one in the DCU. When it comes to Star Wars, the actor is a lifelong fan of the franchise… but he doesn't have George Lucas on speed dial.
“It's not really a privilege… I mean, it's for some people, right? “I want this, and this is what I will play,” explains the actor. “And there are 20 people in this industry who can dictate what they do next and when they do it. I'm not one of those people. And due to the fact that I am waiting with bated breath for someone to offer me another job or the privilege of auditioning for another job in order to get this job. This is my way. I don't have the power of yes or no. I just hear “Yes, please.”
Lillard's career has been enjoying something of a renaissance since he was cast in the Five Nights at Freddy's film franchise as supervillain William Afton (though he never fell out of favor with us millennials). Following the release of Five Nights at Freddy's in 2023 (and grossing $291 million worldwide), Lillard starred in Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Stephen King's The Life of Chuck and will play Director Greil in Flanagan's upcoming series Carrie. reprise his iconic role as Stu Macher in Scream 7and play a “humble billionaire” in the second season of Prime Video's hit drama Cross.
The pop culture icon is currently filming Hippo! with Andor creator Tony Gilroy… so maybe there's still some hope for Lillard's Star Wars dreams.
Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will be released in theaters on December 5, 2025. For more, check out our list of the most exciting movies. upcoming movies in 2025 and beyond, or jump straight to our list movie release dates.
