Nathaniel Mitchell will return as head coach of Canada's senior men's basketball team for the first qualifying window for the 2027 Men's Basketball World Cup.
Basketball Canada announced its coaching plans in a press release Monday. Mitchell replaces Team Canada head coach Gordie Herbert, who currently coaches defending champion Bayern Munich in the German basketball Bundesliga.
“I am truly grateful and humbled by this new opportunity to represent our country,” Mitchell said in a press release. “As we move into the next quad under Gordie Herbert, we obviously expect continued growth and winning.
“Qualifying for the World Cup is the most important thing and for that we need to compete and win every game we play.”
Assistant coaches JD Jackson, Hanno Mottola and Phil Jevtovic were also named to Team Canada.
Canada will face the Bahamas in two games: Friday in Nassau and Dec. 1 in Toronto.
Mitchell led Canada to a fourth place finish at the FIBA Men's America's Cup in August.
He was also Jordi Fernandez's assistant when Canada beat the United States for bronze at the 2023 World Championships.
