UGA dismisses OL Nyier Daniels after police chase tied to mom

Georgia Coach Kirby Smart fired backup offensive lineman Nayer Daniels on Monday, a day after his arrest after he allegedly drove more than 150 mph while attempting to elude police in Commerce, Georgia.

Daniels, of Newark, New Jersey, faces more than a dozen criminal charges and was being held Monday on $21,000 bail at the Jackson County Jail in Jefferson, Georgia.

Daniels faces two counts of second-degree child abuse and two counts of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, according to a police incident report obtained by ESPN.

Daniels fled from police with his two younger siblings in a car, according to the report.

He faces a further 10 motoring offences, including careless driving and driving under maximum restrictions.

“[I] I haven't had a chance to talk to him or his family, but obviously he won't be with us anymore,” Smart told reporters during a news conference Monday.

Daniels' mother, Brandi Canada-Green, was also charged in the incident, according to Commerce Police Chief Jeff Drossman.

The officer pulled over a Nissan Rogue driven by Canada-Green for running a stop sign, Drossman said. The police report states that a BMW M5 driven by Daniels passed an officer who was driving more than 100 mph in a 25 mph speed zone.

The officer exited the Canada-Green vehicle and pursued the BMW driven by Daniels.

“At this time, the first vehicle the officer attempted to stop pulled into the roadway in front of the Commerce Police Department chief and prevented the chief from passing to assist the officer in the pursuit,” Drossman said in an emailed statement. “The chief tried to stop the first car, but it refused to stop.”

Drossman said Canada-Green's car reached speeds of more than 100 mph as she tried to flee from police.

The officer lost sight of Daniels' BMW, which the report said was traveling at more than 150 mph on U.S. Interstate 85, and the pursuit ended. According to the report, at one point during the chase, Canada-Green called her daughter in the BMW and “told the kids to stop running from the police and to 'get your asses back to Commerce.'”

Officers pulled over to the side of I-85 and waited for the Canada-Green vehicle to pass. She was stopped and arrested.

Canada-Green was charged with one count of attempting to elude a police officer and five misdemeanors, including willful obstruction of law enforcement officers and careless driving.

A UGA athletics official later returned Daniels to Commerce, where he surrendered to police. The officer said he “immediately smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle” when Daniels exited the BMW.

When the officer asked Daniels why he ran, he replied, “He didn't want his mother to get a ticket.”

When the officer informed Daniels that he and his mother would go to jail instead, Daniels said, “It got worse.”

The officer tried to explain the severity of the situation and what could have happened to Daniels and his younger siblings while traveling at that speed, and Daniels allegedly said, “You don't know how to drive.”

“Nier did not seem to care about the situation he was in or the fact that he had endangered the lives of his two younger siblings,” the officer wrote in the report.

A former top recruit from Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, N.J., Daniels played as a reserve in Georgia's wins over MarshallFCC program Austin Peay And Charlotte this season.
