A Mississippi high school football coach sparked outrage this weekend after he hit an opposing QB who was trying to run out of bounds.
An ugly scene occurred in the second quarter of the Mid-South Independent Schools Association Class 4A-D3 title game between Lamar High and Brookhaven Academy at Mississippi College's Robinson-Hale Stadium on Saturday night.
Lamar's Sullivan Reed raced toward the Brookhaven sideline looking for a first down. After reaching the first down marker, he dove to the sideline, where a Brookhaven assistant coach hit him, sending him to the ground.
Reed jumped out, rightfully angry, and threw the ball at the coach. However, the ball hit a Brookhaven player in the head and a massive brawl ensued.
Incredibly, Reed was ejected from the game. Meanwhile, the coach who began to walk away in the most cowardly manner after shoving the quarterback was given only a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and allowed to remain on the sideline.
The coach likely won't stay on the sidelines for some time, or ever; once MAIS reviews the record and issues its own disciplinary action.
As for Reed and his Lamar team, they beat Brookhaven 34-17 to win their seventh state championship.
