Donald Glover has revealed he suffered a stroke last year while touring as his musical alter ego Childish Gambino.
“I had a really bad headache in Louisiana and I still did the show,” Glover, 42, told the crowd during a Nov. 22 performance at the Camp Flog Gnaw music festival, according to a video posted on social media.
After the tour moved to Houston, he said he ended up in the hospital.
“The doctor said, ‘You’ve had a stroke,’” he said.
“The first thing I thought was, 'Oh, I'm still copying Jamie Foxx,'” he joked, meaning stroke The Lucha star was injured in April 2023, leaving him hospitalized for several weeks.
“It really feels like the latter. The first one was like, 'I'm letting everyone down,'” Glover continued.
He said doctors found “a hole in my heart” which led to him having two surgeries.
He then reflected on what his health scare taught him while interacting with the crowd.
“They say everyone has two lives, and the second life begins when you realize that you have one. You guys have one life and I have to be honest. The life I have lived with you guys has been such a blessing. I love seeing and performing for you guys,” he said. “As my wife says, and I like it, she says: If this life is a taste, as soon as I'm done, give me another helping.”
“You should live the life you want because it can only get better,” Glover concluded. “If we have to do this again, things can only get better.”
The update on Glover's health comes just over a year after he announced on October 4, 2024, that he cancellation of the remainder of Childish Gambino's “New World Tour” due to health problems.
The musician and actor revealed on Channel X that he was hospitalized due to an unspecified illness after a concert in New Orleans.
“At the moment,” he wrote, “I have an operation scheduled and I need time to recover.”
