GDANSK – Courtney Saro, Stephen Dubois and the mixed relay team won bronze medals for Canada on Sunday at the ISU short track speed skating competition.
Sarah, from Moncton, Nebraska, was leading the women's 1,500 meters heading into the final lap, but was unable to fend off Koreans Choi Minjeong and Kim Gilley and finished third with a time of two minutes, 30.985 seconds. Minjeong won (2:30.656), ahead of Gilly (2:30.610).
Saro won his third medal at the distance this season after earning back-to-back gold medals in October during two World Tour stops in Montreal.
Saro was also fourth in the 500m.
Dubois, of Terrebonne, Que., was third in the men's 1,000 meters in 1:25.283. The victory was won by Jens Van 'T Wout from the Netherlands (1:25.147), and the Italian Pietro Siegel (1:25.195) took silver.
“Obviously I would have liked to have finished higher on the podium, but I haven’t finished lower than sixth in any of the distances I’ve competed this year,” Dubois said. “It’s good consistency and good confidence and I think I can push a little more next week to challenge for the gold medal.”
Dubois teamed with William Danginou, Florence Brunel and Danae Blais to earn Canada bronze in the 2,000-meter medley relay. The Canadians finished in 2:40.224, behind the Netherlands (2:40.224) and Korea (2:40.155).
Sarah is in first place in the women's tournament with 570 points, 90 ahead of American Corrine Stoddard. Dangina of Montreal leads the men's tournament with 652 points, ahead of Siegel (512) and Dubois (492).
