NFL news: Ex-Titans star Ryan Tannehill shuts door on career after 11 seasons

Some quarterbacks have left NFL games Due to injury last week, the league is already short of quality players in that position.

But it's unlikely that veteran signal caller Ryan Tannehill will return to the NFL this season. Tannehill, the 2019 NFL Comeback Player of the Year, has quietly decided to call it a career.

“I think this chapter is closed,” Tannehill said. Escapist. “I think that was where I was last year if the right opportunity came along and it was right for our family. Stay fit and ready. I had a lot of calls but never had the right opportunity I was looking for. This was the last season of the NFL. At this point, I think that ship has sailed for me.”

Tannehill has not appeared in an NFL game since the 2023 season.

Miami Dolphins drafted Tannehill in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. An anterior cruciate ligament injury forced him to miss the entire 2017 regular season. In 2019, the Dolphins traded Tannehill to the Tennessee Titans.

Tannehill enjoyed a career resurgence at Tennessee, finishing his first season with the team with 2,742 passing yards and 22 touchdowns. This performance earned Tannehill his first career Pro Bowl selection.

While Tannehill admittedly hasn't been able to find the right player, there always seem to be teams that could benefit from having veterans in their quarterback room. Some teams were looking for a way to compensate for the impact of quarterback injuries.

Cincinnati Bengals acquired by Joe Flacco after Joe Burrow suffered a toe injury in September.

Marcus Mariota has appeared in several games this year as Jaden Daniels has dealt with multiple setbacks. Davis Mills started again in place of the injured C.J. Stroud on Thursday night to start Week 12, while Jacoby Brissett is expected to remain the Arizona Cardinals' starter for the rest of the season. Kyler Murray was placed on injured reserve with a foot injury.

Atlanta Falcons caller Michael Penix Jr. left the Week 11 game in the third quarter against the Carolina Panthers. He later had knee surgery late in the season, the team confirmed. Bryce Young was also injured in that game but returned to the game with apparent ankle discomfort.

Aaron Rodgers left the field before the end of the Pittsburgh Steelers' win over the Bengals, and Jordan Love also briefly left last week's game with an injury.

Both of Tannehill's former teams have struggled this season. The Titans enter Week 12 with just one win. Rookie Defender Cam Ward The top overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft has thrown six touchdowns and six interceptions in his first 10 games.

The Dolphins parted ways with general manager Chris Grier earlier this month. Miami got off to a slow start this season but managed to win its last two games. The Dolphins are coming off a bye week after defeating the Washington Commanders in the league. first game of the regular season in Spain last Sunday.
