Former Temple guard Heizer Miller made dozens of bets on his team during his college basketball career, including several bets on his team to lose, the NCAA announced Friday.
The NCAA alleges Miller made 42 parlay bets totaling $473 on Temple games in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. Of those 42 bets, three were against his own team, the Temple Owls.
Miller, a starter for the Owls, used other people's sportsbook accounts to place bets, according to the NCAA.
The former Owl admitted to placing parlay bets on Temple games, but claims he doesn't remember placing any bets against his team.
Jason P. Bologna, Miller's lawyer, stressed that the NCAA found no evidence of point reductions in its investigation.
“Hisier gave them full access to his cell phone and bank account, and he answered every question they asked him. He admitted to placing parlay bets but denied docking points in any game, and the NCAA's findings confirm that they accept that Heiser was honest and cooperative with their investigation,” Bologna. said.
Miller wasn't the only member of the Owls program involved in illegal sports gambling. Former Temple special assistant coach Camren Winter and graduate student Jaylen Bond were found to have bet on professional and college sports. Neither of them bet on Temple games.
The NCAA's announcement comes after nearly three dozen arrests, including current and former NBA players and coaches, as part of an FBI crackdown on sports deals and other illegal gambling activities linked to organized crime.
