CALGARY — Speed ​​skating star Jordan Stoltz of the United States won gold and Canadians Ted-Jan Bloemen and Valerie Malthe took bronze Friday at the world championships in Calgary.

Stolz, a two-time world champion in the 500m, 1000m and 1500m, beat Dutch arch-rival Jenning De Boo at the Olympic Oval by just over a tenth of a second in the men's 1000m.

Calgary's Bloemen set the Oval record in the men's 5K, which was later broken by winner Casey Dawson of the United States and runner-up Sander Eitrem of Norway.

Valerie Malthe of La Baie, Que., won bronze in the women's 3,000 meters following her silver medal at the season opener in Salt Lake City.

Joy Byun from the Netherlands won the women's 3 km. The Dutch finished first to fourth in the women's 1000m, with Femke Kok the winner.

Racing continues on Saturday and Sunday.
