A woman was evicting her son from her home at Bermuda Club, a gated community near Vero Beach.

There were three sheriff's deputies and a locksmith in the entrance of the house.

The homeowner's son, Michael Halberstam, 33, who was facing eviction, went and got a gun from another part of the house, Flowers said.

Halberstam opened fire on two sheriff's deputies as well as a locksmith, the sheriff said.

The shooting victims included:

  • Deputy Terry Mashkow, 47 years old: Late . She worked for the IRC Sheriff's Office for 25 years, starting as a dispatcher.

  • Deputy Tino Arizpe: Shot in the shoulder; after the shot he ran into the garage, but will survive

  • Locksmith (name withheld): Was also shot; According to the latest data, he was in the surgical department and was in critical condition.

Flowers said a third deputy at the scene was not injured by gunfire. He shot at the suspect, wounding him.

According to the latest information, Halberstam was in the surgical department and was in critical condition.

Flowers said the suspect's criminal history includes a 2006 drug possession charge and a 2015 assault (misdemeanor) charge, both of which occurred in Virginia.

The sheriff said there have been seven calls to the home on Governors Way in the past month, nearly all of them from the suspect's mother.

Flowers also said the suspect was fired from his job at UPS and had also posted negative comments about the Indian River Sheriff's Office on social media.

Flowers said investigators are also looking into whether Mashkov's shot struck the suspect. He added that Friday's shooting was only the second line-of-duty death at the Indian River Sheriff's Office in the last 100 years.
