Picture the scene: You're standing on the sidelines at your child's soccer game as he prepares to take the winning penalty. You framed the shot beautifully, pressed record in preparation for that big moment, and then disaster struck: “iPhone storage is full. You can free up space on this iPhone by managing your storage in Settings.” Cue swear word.
We've all been in situations like this before—I once received that scary message while interviewing an actor on the red carpet—and there's no such thing as a good time to run out of phone storage, whether you're using an iPhone or an Android phone.
So if you are looking for a new phone Black FridayMy one big piece of advice when purchasing is to consider choosing the 256GB model instead of the invariably cheaper 128GB model. And there are several reasons why I say this.
First, it's worth noting that you probably won't realize the limitations of 128GB storage capacity until you get a new phone a couple of years from now. You'll be able to download and use all your favorite social media apps, take over 1,000 photos, and even download a few Netflix movies before your device starts warning you to take your time.
But most people keep their phones for longer than two years, and it's after two or three years that the decision to go with the cheapest amount of storage will start to feel like a mistake.
That's because the above-mentioned apps and photos are not the same apps and photos they were 10 or even five years ago. As phone cameras evolve, the size of photos taken with them increases, and the size of apps also increases thanks to new features, better graphics and more regular updates.
We detail Why does your smartphone memory seem to disappear faster? in a separate article on TechRadar, but the point is that for some types of applications, storage needs have increased by as much as 1000% in the last 10 years.
Phone manufacturers know this. Apple gave up my 64GB iPhone iPhone 16e onwards, and the same thing happened with 128 GB on iPhone 17 (so if you buy one of these new models, you'll get 256GB as standard). This alone should tell you that 128GB is a capacity that is no longer fit for purpose.
Of course, there are ways to get around the storage issue on the device. Features like Optimize iPhone Storage and cloud services such as iCloud And Google One eliminates the need for a ton of physical real estate, but they cost money to use effectively, require an Internet connection to work, and only apply to photos (no amount of iCloud storage will allow you to download four movies for a long flight).
Therefore, I recommend paying extra for additional storage on your device at the time of purchase. Grit your teeth and opt for the 256GB model where possible (512GB is overkill for most), and you won't have to spend hundreds of dollars on extra cloud storage or tear your hair out during your kid's soccer game.
