Cleveland advances to City Section Division II football final

Cleveland High School pulled out a fourth-quarter victory Thursday night to defeat Fairfax 14-7 in a City Section Division II semifinal game at Taft.

Cleveland (5-8) trailed 7-6 at halftime. The Cavaliers finally took the lead on a pass from quarterback Domenic Fuentes to JJ Fuentes (unrelated) after a teammate tossed the ball. Domenick also ran for a touchdown in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead.

In the championship game on Nov. 28, Cleveland will play the winner of Friday's other semifinal game between Marshall and San Fernando.

Domenic Fuentes suffered a dislocated elbow in Week 0 against Harvard-Westlake. He returned in a reserve role near the end of the regular season, but he stayed on the field in the final two playoff victories.

“He leads us,” coach Mario Guzman said.

Fairfax finished 4-9.
