Paramount Reportedly Wants to ‘Sonic-Fy’ the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Franchise, R-Rated The Last Ronin Film Ditched in Favor of New Live-Action Reboot Movie

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is reportedly in for a shock of its own as Paramount plans to reboot the live-action film series inspired by the Sonic film franchise.

Sources said Hollywood Reporter that Paramount refused movie “The Last Ronin” rated Ra live-action/animation hybrid (though he may return to it one day), and will now focus on live-action instead. The sequel to Mutant Mayhem is due out on September 17, 2027.

First released back in 2020, The Last Ronin features a dystopian world where all but one of the turtles have died. I take inspiration from God of War among other works. It was written by original creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, who said it was based on the plot of a 1987 short story.

The Last Ronin was a big success for the Turtles, leading to a sequel starring new generation of turtles. A Video game “The Last Ronin” is also in development, although we haven't received any updates on it for some time.

The last live-action or live-action/animation hybrid Turtles film was 2016's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which bombed at the box office. Successful animated Turtles films followed, including 2023's Mutant Mayhem.

Paramount has reportedly tapped Neal H. Moritz, producer of the “Fast and the Furious” and “Sonic” film franchises, to helm the new “Turtles” series in an attempt to “realize its full potential,” THR reported.

Given the success of the Sonic films, you can understand why Paramount would want the producer to repeat this trick with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In January, Paramount hailed the success of the Sonic film franchise after Sonic the Hedgehog 3 helped it gross $1 billion at the global box office. 2024's Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which stars Keanu Reeves as Shadow, earned nearly half a billion dollars during its theatrical run.

It feels like a new era of Turtles movies is dawning, and there's no indication of when the first movie will be released.
