The Ontario government has unveiled a new initiative to encourage people to upgrade their home appliances to more energy-efficient models.
On Wednesday, Energy Minister Stephen Lecce announced an expanded Home Improvement Savings Program that will provide Ontarians with checks of up to $200 toward the purchase of energy-efficient refrigerators, freezers and washing machines.
The rebate program begins this fall and applies to all homes connected to Ontario's electric grid, including condos and apartments. Purchases can be made at any retailer, online or in-store, and discounts will be provided within 60 days of approval.

The rebate is part of a broader Ontario program. Energy Efficiency Framework Program The project aims to reduce the province's peak demand by 3,000 megawatts by 2036, the equivalent of taking three million homes off the grid.
