Capcom wanted mouse support in Resident Evil Requiem on Switch 2, but it “confused the gameplay”

Next entry in Capcom's Resident Evil Series is just a few months away, and while it was originally announced for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, it's also coming to Switch 2. But will it make the most of the Switch 2's features?

Well, according to Resident Evil Requiem producer Masato Kumazawa, the team did try to make the game work with the Switch 2's mouse controls, but that only made things more difficult than expected.

Kumazawa-san was asked a question: PressStart about problems unique to Switch 2 development that the producer started off by saying didn't exist. “Looking back, the Switch used to have Resident Evil games, so we used our past experience developing those games on the Switch to help develop Nintendo Switch 2,” explained producer Requiem.

“But we also made a lot of versions of games for PC. By choosing a PC with a wide variety of specs, we could also just make sure that the game was optimized for Nintendo Switch 2. So it wasn't too difficult, so to speak.”

Okay, everything was smooth… Except when it wasn't. “We tried very hard to implement mouse control for Nintendo Switch 2,” continued Kumazawa-san. “When we added it, it confused the gameplay and became too difficult.”

Because of this complexity and confusion, the team uses gyroscope control instead.
