Prep talk: Young officials offer hope for the future in high school sports

In recent years, there has been a shortage of specialists in school sports. Daniel Ashikian, 21, and Casey Pope, 18, answered the call.

This is their second season officiating basketball games in the San Fernando Valley division.

“It’s better than working at McDonald’s,” Pope said.

Pope played basketball at Monroe High and immediately wanted to become an official. Ashikyan played basketball on his own for many years and wanted to continue playing the sport. This week they competed in a girls junior team match in Granada Hills.

It's hard enough for veteran officials to deal with coaches, players and fans. The fact that these two young officials have taken on this challenge gives hope for the future – that other former players will join them and become officials.

This is a daily look at positive developments in school sports. To report any news, email [email protected].
