If you're looking for a laptop, you have no shortage of choices. But unless you need something with exceptionally powerful hardware or are on a very tight budget, I'm here to end your search right now: you should buy MacBook Air M4especially when it's on sale for $749 before Black Friday.
Apple's latest MacBook Air is, in my opinion, without a doubt the best laptop for most people – at least for people who don't need Windows. It's an entry-level machine, but it's not: the laptop is powered by the Apple M4 chip, which was until recently the company's latest equipment. (That said, the M5 MacBook Air doesn't exist yet, so it's still the best Air on the market.) Apple's M series is excellent: in fact, the M1 MacBook Air is still a great machine five years after its release. You can't go wrong with any M-series MacBook these days, although the newer the hardware, the better the performance – a benefit of this M4 Air.
But the M4 is almost an afterthought to me compared to this machine's 16GB of RAM. For years, Apple included only 8GB of RAM in its base computer models. This was good enough for small and simple tasks, but as soon as you started trying to do too much at once, you ran into problems. 8GB of RAM isn't as much as it used to be, so the fact that this machine doubles the memory without affecting the price is a big advantage. However, this configuration has 256GB of internal storage, which could be a problem for anyone who stores large files on their computers.
What do I like most about the M4? Price. When Apple released this machine back in MarchI was impressed by how much value you could get for $999. In fact, it convinced me to stop recommending the M2 MacBook Air even when the latter was already on sale. But despite how new it is, the M4 MacBook Air has Also I saw discounts this year. Right now, ahead of Black Friday, the car is $250 cheaper at Amazon and Best Buy than at Apple. This is a fantastic deal.
Is it worth buying an old MacBook for less?
Of course, there are other, cheaper MacBooks. You can save another $50 and select M2 MacBook Air, which also has 16GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. And if you don't need your car to be brand new, you can find pupgraded MacBook Air M1 for less than $500. Any of these laptops will perform great in 2025, but there are downsides: the M1 only has 8GB of RAM and retains the old Apple MacBook Air design. The MacBook Air M2 looks identical to its M4 counterpart, but is three years old. By spending an extra $50 on a new Air, you could save another two to three years on your computer's software updates, not to mention the immediate performance boost from the new chip.
