Bartenders at the Falls Tavern described the group as “pleasant,” adding that they weren't causing any trouble.

The criminal complaint said the Canadian group, including Robinson, tried to negotiate with Cruz-Burgos for a ride back to their hotel. One witness claimed that Cruz-Burgos wanted $60 per person, later claiming that Cruz-Burgos only wanted $40.

But the group refused to pay this price and decided to walk to their hotel in Kohler, located about 8 kilometers away.

Cruz-Burgos later told detectives he had been working for DoorDash for about nine months and making deliveries in a black Ford Escape. Witnesses identified the man as the man whom the Canadian group refused to pay for the trip.

The witness and suspect told officers there was no dispute over the cash. Cruz-Burgos said one of the group members called him “stupid” and pushed him away.

The incident was recorded on CCTV cameras

The entire horrific episode was captured on CCTV, giving investigators a complete timeline of events from the moment Robinson and others left the bar at midnight on September 24. Shots followed and the black SUV fled at high speed at 12:08 p.m.

Another witness told detectives he saw the same black Ford Escape slow down and shoot his friend at one point. Cruz-Burgos denied wrongdoing and said he was unable to own a firearm due to a 2019 Florida court order stemming from a domestic incident.

Robinson died at the scene from a single gunshot wound.

His family said in a statement: “We would like to begin by expressing our deepest gratitude to the police department for their swift action and arrest. We are also grateful for the incredible support of the community, whose strength and unity helped bring this case to completion.”

“We would also like to express our gratitude to the Inn on Woodlake and Wenig Funeral Home for their kindness and support during this difficult time. To all the local businesses that offered their services and to every person who reached out, sent us a message or prayed for us.”

Cruz faces up to 60 years in prison if convicted of the charges.
