Hypixel founder Simon Collins-Laflamme says Hightail is not ready to launch in Early Access simply because it is not “good enough” for this yet.
This week, Collins-Laflamme announced that he had bought the rights to Hytale from Riot Games six months later the company closed the project and closed the development team. After this fantastic news, Ant Venom managed to interview Collins-Laflamme, who spoke in detail about the current state of the project. The TLDR is that it needs more time in the oven, and it looks like even when it goes into Early Access it will be pretty basic.
“Let’s set realistic expectations,” Collins-Laflamme said. “Many features will be missing at launch. Mini-games that have been shown or talked about in the past will not be available on day one. There will be bugs and it will feel like true early access. We will need a community to help us move forward.”
Simply put, Collins-Laflamme said: “In my opinion, the game is not good enough right now, and I recognize that.”
Of course, the fact that Hytale is returning is good enough news, and frankly, after such a whirlwind development process, I'm pleasantly surprised that Collins-Laflamme is even talking about release plans. This tells me that many of the core systems and features that Hypixel worked on independently and then under Riot are still working. Collins-Laflamme suggested that modding is one feature that still needs a lot of work.
“Modding already has a lot to offer, but we want to add more tools and features for modders, server owners and map creators,” he said. “There's a lot missing, but we need to get the game out, we need to break the curse.”
This is entirely in line with what Collins-Laflamme said in his initial Twitter announcement that “Hytale is back.”
“Real talk: Hytale is not some polished AAA release waiting in the wings,” he said. “It's messy. It's messy. And there's a lot of work to be done. My plan? Get it out to you as soon as possible. No more waiting. You can play it, bumps and all. It won't be perfect on day one. I hope that together we can turn it into something really special.”
There's no early access release date yet, but it looks like we won't have to wait very long.
