Google’s Call Recording is launching on more Pixel devices

Google is rolling out a new call recording feature to older Pixel models that don't support some of the new AI-powered calling features.

According to Edge, The new rollout will target Pixel 6 and newer devices that cannot support the all-new Gemini Nano-powered call notes feature that was released as part of November pixel drop.

Google first announced the expansion of its call recording feature back in September. in a blog post discussion of artificial intelligence phone calling features. This feature should be available in an update to the Google Phone app along with the November Pixel Drop, which is available now.

To add some context, Call Notes uses artificial intelligence to transcribe calls, create notes, and offer suggestions based on conversations. This feature is currently available on Pixel 9 and later. However, the Call Recording feature (available in Settings > Call Assist > Call Recording in the Phone app) records the phone call as an audio file that is saved on your device and is not transcribed.

Recording can be started manually at the start of a call or in the Phone app settings, where you can choose to automatically record the call for calls from certain numbers or for calls that aren't in your contacts. Entries can be automatically deleted after 7, 14 or 30 days, or you can keep them forever.

For security purposes, you'll also need to upload some audio files that let everyone in the conversation know that they're being recorded. Please note that this feature may not be available to everyone due to privacy laws in certain regions. This depends on whether you live in a province, territory or “one-party consent” state.

Android 14 or later is required to access the call recording feature on Pixel 6 or later devices. Interesting, according to Edge, If you have the Phone by Google app installed on a non-Pixel device, you only need Android 9 or later.
