Freedom Mobile has invested $35 million to acquire wireless spectrum in Manitoba, which it hopes will lay the foundation for a new network in the province. This will also be a big step in helping Freedom build its own network across Canada.
The network rollout will begin in Winnipeg, targeting areas that serve the largest number of people, and then expand to the rest of the province. The flanker brand Freedom's Fizz will also be coming to the province over time. However, the company has not yet announced when it plans to open stores and go online.
Freedom is already started offering plans to people in Manitobabut it used other carriers' networks and operated as an MVMO. Now that the company plans to build its own infrastructure, it can choose not to pay fees to one of the three companies to lease its spectrum.
A press release from Freedom's parent company, Quebecor, also mentioned the possibility of collaborating with Manitoba to develop and distribute more French-language content to French communities in the Prairie province. “Several projects have been discussed with expected economic benefits of several million dollars from production and filming costs in Manitoba,” the press release said.
Quebecor has been on the rise since it acquired Freedom Mobile a few years ago. It looks like the company is still taking steps to become the fourth major telecom player in the country and this breakthrough couldn't have come at a better time. However, after the sale of Freedom, the operator was ordered to maintain tariffs 30 percent lower than those of the three largest telecommunications companies. Time will tell if this price difference will continue.
