According to US media, Kris Boyd, a defensive end for the American football team New York Jets, was shot in the abdomen early on Sunday morning.
The 29-year-old man is in critical condition in hospital, the New York Police Department told CBS News, BBC's US partner. The NYPD did not name Boyd as the victim, but a Jets spokesman confirmed to the BBC that Boyd was shot.
Around 02:00 local time (0700 GMT) on Sunday morning, police received a 911 call about a shooting in midtown Manhattan. Police responded to the scene near the upscale Sei Less restaurant.
The investigation is still ongoing and police do not have any suspects in custody, the NYPD told CBS.
“We are aware of the situation with Kris Boyd and will not be commenting further at this time,” a Jets spokesman told the BBC.
Before joining the Jets earlier this year, Boyd played two seasons with the Houston Texans, one season with the Arizona Cardinals and four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.
The cornerback was on injured reserve for the Jets after suffering a shoulder injury during team practice in August.
New York Jets linebacker Jermaine Johnson posted a message on X asking for prayers for his teammate.
“Lord, please extend your healing hand over Chris and bring him back to health and safety. Lord, I ask you to please help him get through this safely,” Johnson wrote.
Other fans reacted to X, praying for Boyd's recovery.
