Organic bedding brand Coyuchi recently released its own organic mattress that combines cotton, wool and Dunlop latex atop individually wrapped coils. While Koyuchi linen sheets excellent, I was a little nervous to try the company's first mattress. After all, bed linen is not a mattress, and expertise does not always transfer between different lines of business. However, in this case it happened. Coyuchi's Natural REM Organic Mattress is amazingly firm without being too hard and perfect for those of us who are heavy sleepers and tend to sleep in multiple directions: side, back, stomach. I never felt uncomfortable.

The design begins by enclosing coils on a wool pad, and then, as with the Midwestern gravy, a layer of smaller coils, latex and then wool is laid down, then topped with an organic cotton cover. There's surprisingly good edge support considering the distance between the coils and the top, and the mattress also provides good motion isolation. Koyuchi says Natural REM can be used with or without a box spring. I tested it for a few months on a box spring and then spent a week just on the floor and didn't notice a difference. At a depth of 11 inches there is place for topperalthough I didn't feel the need for it.

The cotton and wool layers are GOTS certified organic, and the Dunlop latex is GOLS certified. The material is undyed, which is great for those who are concerned about industrial dyes.
