Let The Big ‘Dawg Speak: Onside Kicks, Defensive Theory, and a Texas-sized Whippin’

A tired but clearly cheerful Kirby Smart met with the assembled media after Georgia's 35-10 win over Texas and was asked exactly what to expect after the game. Other topics on Top Dawg's agenda include:

  • Kick offside. Kirby added some color to the decision to bet on this offside kick. It looks like part of the thought process was just not wanting to hit him on explosive returner Ryan Niblett and watch him run through a hole that an 18-wheeler could go over.

  • How a kick cleared the way for Kirby Smart's patented anaconda attack. It was clear to anyone watching that the game was essentially over after the game was restored. As Kirby notes, this is a devastating situation for the defense, and even a very good Texas defense clearly wasn't the same after spending most of the fourth quarter on the field and on its heels.

  • Those two 4-down conversions, including the second one, which it turns out Kirby Smart had no intention of attempting to convert. This was just one example of a penalty killing a Texas team that had struggled with them all season.

  • Steady appearance of Quintavious Johnson.

  • A piece of Kirby Smart's defensive theory: why the best pass on third down is actually a good play on first and second down.

  • An update of sorts on C.J. Allen.

  • What was the deal with Brett Thorson?

  • Big night for native Texans like Noah Thomas and Cash Jones.

And much more. As always, our sincere thanks to our good friends from Bulldog Illustrated for using their high quality videos. Be sure to check out Bulldog's news coverage, which is timely, comprehensive and interesting.
