Tree smashes car in Altadena as Eaton Fire burn scar is hit with heavy downpour

Saturday's storm raised concerns about recent fires.

The Eaton fire area was under an evacuation warning, but it has since been lifted. There was heavy rainfall in the area throughout the day.

Damage to a tree that uprooted and fell on a car in Altadena closed one street for nearly seven hours.

Toyota RAV4 was completely destroyed by a tree. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Crews worked for hours to cut down and remove the fallen tree.

“We heard this big bang, a very unnatural bang, like you've never heard before,” said Jim Germanok, who rented the crashed RAV4.

Jermanok is visiting from New York and says he had several meetings on Saturday.

“My friend Tom looked outside and said, 'Jim, is that your car?!' And I walked outside and saw the biggest tree I've ever seen in my life, flattening the entire back of the car,” Jermanok said.

It's something that Jermanok said he couldn't put into words.

“I was just in complete shock. I couldn't believe it. Of all the cars in the world, of all the gin bars in the world, of all the other cars in the world. It had to be mine? I left. I'm only here for a week,” Jermanok said.

Neighbors say they've been through a lot with the Eaton fire and now the rain.

“This street is full of them, so one of them is right in front of our house, and the sidewalk is sagging so I'm afraid it will fall. It's just been a bad year for our street,” neighbor Karen Delgado said.

Some Sierra Madre residents say they were exploring their neighborhood when water poured through a pool of trash.

“It's funny to think that if we were anywhere else but Southern California, it would just be a Saturday, but here we are, in all our rain gear and stuff, braving the elements,” Vera Scheidlinger said.

Back in Altadena, Jermanok said he was simply counting his blessings.

“I thank God I wasn’t in that car. This is the main thing,” he said.

Luckily, Jermanok said he had rental insurance and spoke with the rental company on Saturday.
