Although Glen Powell now appears ready for true movie stardom in the style of mentor Tom Cruise, but that wasn't always the case. Blockbuster actor Top Shot: Maverick And Twisters has spoken openly about his struggles breaking into Hollywood, and one of those lackluster experiences was failing to audition for the two-time Oscar winner. Dustin Hoffman.
Powell remembered what happened to Hot host Sean Evans during a recent press tour to promote his appearance running Man. When asked to describe the gap between his expectations and the reality of the acting scene in Los Angeles when he was 19 years old, Powell said he met Hoffman at a dinner his first week in town and was delighted to find out Rain Man the star saw him in Denzel Washington's car Great debaters.
“The fact that he saw the movie just blew my mind,” Powell recalled. “I thought, 'This is the coolest moment of my life.' He said, “You are a good actor.” I was like, “Oh man, thanks.” He says, “I have something, I have something for you.” Let's keep in touch.”
A couple of days later, Powell said he received a call from Hoffman inviting him to his office to read for the role.
“I started reading [the pages]but I was so thrilled that Dustin Hoffman was sitting across from me. He is one of my favorite actors of all time. As I read, I watch the life drain from his eyes and say, “This guy sucks so much.” And I was like, “Oh no.” Set it up – the actor explained.
He continued, chuckling, “I look at it, I'm losing it. And then I'm like, 'Yeah, you're losing it,' and then I look back and I'm losing it even more. And I walked away so defeated.”
But all's well that ends well, as Powell said, will accept Saturday Night Live his debut is tonight — said he learned an important lesson about navigating the industry.
“What you start to realize is that this whole business is a game. You start to look at these guys as legends, and then you start to look at them as employees who are just trying to create magic for audiences around the world,” he concluded.
