Raven Symone’s Colleen Ballinger Interview Sparks Backlash

Some viewers also noticed that amid the backlash, the episode's title appeared to change from focusing on Colleen's apology to “Colleen Ballinger Tells Her Side” – after it was revealed that Colleen only apologized at Raven's prompting.

During the interview, Colleen discussed how she failed to “adjust” her risqué comedy style and fan interaction as her audience moved from an “adult audience” to a “much more teen audience.”

“When I was interacting with my fans, I didn't think about the power dynamics that might be there, I didn't think about parasocial relationships, which I should have,” she said. “I should have been more responsible in thinking about it, but I didn’t even think about myself that way. I thought, “Yes, we are friends.” I think I felt the same way and for me it was like I was just talking to my friends. “I talk to all of them like they're my friends, my sisters, they're all fans, and I definitely should have been more careful about how I joked around with them and what I said to them.”

However, Colleen denied the accusations of leaving. “I know that my intentions and my actions were never fueled by a desire to manipulate or groom anyone,” she said. “I have never done this and never will. This is a very serious charge.”

Despite this, she said she wanted to be more considerate of the “offenses” people expressed. Referring to the ukulele video, she added: “I obviously didn't handle the situation the way I should have and it's really embarrassing. I wish I could have handled it differently than I did.”

“I think people want an apology,” Raven said, which Colleen then gave.

“I agree with you,” Colleen replied. “I think they really want an apology and I'm really sorry. Here's the thing: when you mess up and make a mistake and do something wrong, sometimes you have to keep apologizing for it, and that's what I had to do. People keep talking [the ukulele video is] an apology song—I wasn’t apologetic about that. There was no 'apology' in it… It's clear that I was angry, and that's why I keep saying that I wish I could just pause for a second and listen to my fans, my supporters.”

(BuzzFeed reached out to Raven representatives about the episode's title change claim but did not immediately receive a response.)

One person said of the supposed title change: “I love that the original title was 'Colleen's true apology' and then looking back and realizing she still never apologized unless asked and then changing the title to 'Colleen Telling Her Side' is truly diabolical.”

Another simply said: “Changing the name is INSANE.”
